Who this is for: For anyone about to look for a writer on Notable Authors.
Finding a writer
Is hiring a ghostwriter cheating?
No. The ideas and the story are yours. The ghostwriter’s job is to put them on the page in your voice.
Who are the ghostwriters on Notable Authors?
Book ghostwriters. That’s it. Someone on our team has read each writer’s work before approving their listing and listing is free for all writers. About us →
How do I choose one?
Read through profiles and look at what they write about. Read their samples, the books they’ve worked on and their price range. Writers who have completed books for clients on the Notable Authors site can have clients write anonymous reviews that are stamped Paid in full. Browse the writers →
Why are the writers in a different order each time?
We don’t rank writers so we put them in a different order so that one shouldn’t be promoted over another.
Can I speak to someone a writer has worked for?
Some writers say on their profile that client references are available on request. If yours does, ask them.
How can I check a ghostwriter’s work if their books are confidential?
Ask for samples with the names changed, and for any books they’re allowed to name. Before we list a writer, someone on our team reads two of their samples, one in their own voice and one written as someone else. You can read the samples each writer shares on their profile. And when a client finishes a book here, they can leave an anonymous review stamped Paid in full, so a writer builds a record without anyone naming the book. What Paid in full proves →
Getting in touch
How do I contact a ghostwriter?
Send an inquiry from their profile with the “Contact” button, which shows the writer’s first name (“Contact Mike”, say). The form asks you what the book is, who it’s for, and roughly what you can spend. Sending an inquiry costs nothing. You can send the same inquiry to up to five writers at once, the one you’re looking at and any writers you’ve saved. Each gets their own copy and no one sees who else you wrote to.
Is what I tell a ghostwriter confidential?
Only the writer sees your inquiry. Once you accept a contract, it has a confidentiality clause, and it runs both ways. Our team doesn’t read your messages. Someone here reads the thread, the contract and the work only if one of you reports a problem, and reads every review before it’s published.
What happens after I send an inquiry?
You will be notified by email when the writer responds to your inquiry. The writer answers in your message thread on the site, and you can book a call to talk it through. Talk to two or three (or more!) writers, if you like.
The contract
What will the writer send me?
The writer will send you a contract, with the fixed total split into stages, along with the rights and terms. You see all of it before any money moves. You can discuss the terms or ask any questions you have before signing.
Who sets the price?
The writer. We never set a price, and the number that is binding is the one in the contract you both accept.
What does the contract say?
Every contract sits on the same standard agreement that Notable Authors provides. The writer fills in the price, the stages and what each stage delivers. They can add terms of their own, but those can’t override the agreement. Read the agreement →
Can I start with something smaller than a whole book?
Often, yes. Many writers offer a paid book plan, or a proposal with sample chapters, as a smaller first contract. It’s worth asking even if it’s not listed on the writer’s profile.
What if the plan changes partway?
A change to the scope takes a change order you both sign. Neither of you can impose one.
How long does it take?
It depends on the book. Your contract sets a target date, and a delay on either side, like interviews or feedback running late, moves it.
Paying
How do you pay a ghostwriter? Is it all up front?
No. Payments are made through the site, one stage at a time. You pay by stage, never for the whole book up front. How it works →
When does the writer get the money?
When you approve that stage’s work. If you don’t respond, it’s released 7 days after the work is delivered.
Does using the site cost me anything?
No. You pay the price in the contract and nothing on top. Our fee comes out of each stage as it’s paid.
What if a writer asks me to pay them directly?
Don’t. A contract paid outside the site can never earn a review, and we can’t hold the money if something goes wrong. Writers agree that a contract made here is paid here, and a writer who settles any part of one outside the site can be removed from it. What Paid in full proves →
How do I avoid getting scammed by a ghostwriter?
Be wary of anyone who messages you first offering to write your book, a price slashed if you “act now”, a request for the whole fee up front, or a writer who can’t show you any of their writing. Here, someone on our team reads every writer’s work before they’re listed, you pay one stage at a time, and each payment is held until you approve that stage. Never pay a writer outside the site.
If something goes wrong
What if I’m not happy with a stage?
Don’t approve it. Raise the issue instead, and the money stays held. Message your writer in your thread and explain what your concerns are. If that doesn’t settle it, the agreement sets out what happens next. Your contract says how many revision rounds you get. A round is one set of comments on a delivered stage, and asking for one you still have pauses the 7-day clock. Once they’re used up, more revisions take a change order, and so does a real change of direction, like a new audience or a new structure.
Can I stop partway?
Yes, at any time. You owe nothing for stages you haven’t paid for. Money already released to the writer stays with the writer.
Could the writer hand my book to someone else?
No. The writer you chose is the writer who writes it.
Will AI write my book?
No. Our terms don’t allow AI to write the book, and we never train a model on your book. Our AI policy →
When the book is done
Who owns a ghostwritten book?
You do. The agreement says exactly when ownership passes to you.
Can a ghostwriter steal my story?
No. You own the book, and the contract keeps what you share confidential. Without your written permission, the writer can’t name the book, its subject or you. All they can show on their profile is that a finished project exists, with your anonymous review.
Will the ghostwriter get credit on my book?
Only if you want it there. The writer gets either no credit at all or the credit line you both agreed upon.
Can I leave a review?
When the last stage is released, you’re invited to. Your name never appears, and a member of our team checks the review before it goes up. It’s stamped Paid in full because you paid the whole contract here.
What happens after the manuscript?
That’s where we stop. The finished manuscript is yours, and publishing, printing and the launch are yours too.
On Notable Authors, you pay one stage at a time, and each payment is held until you approve the pages.
